A Master’s Program “German Culture and Its Society”
Objectives
The German Studies Center of Peking University was founded in 2002 as an educational and research institution. It cooperates with many departments of the university: department of German literature, school of international relations, school of law, department of sociology, school of economics, department of history, department of philosophy, graduate school of education, and department of art. Faculties from those departments work together in the aim of the master’s program “German Culture and Its Society”, bringing up young people theoretically and practically.
Administration
The GermanStudiesCenter cooperates with the departments mentioned above to fulfill the tasks of the graduate program. The way of the cooperation is that those departmentsare in charge of the enrollment according to a certain quota, have responsibilities to deal with the administrative matters and Master's degrees awarding. The students of the center are required to finish both the courses in the department and the courses offered by the center. The instructors are members who come from the relative departments.
The GermanStudiesCenter also cooperates with the universities in Germany. The way of cooperation is that the students study in PekingUniversity at the first three semesters, then study in German universities for two semesters , collecting data for the thesis under the guidance of their German supervisors, finally finish their thesis in PekingUniversity.
Curriculum
(1) Overview of Credit Requirements:
- Required credits within the departments: 16
- Required credits within the German universities: 6
- Required credits within the center: 12
- Required credits within the public courses of PekingUniversity: 9
Successful completion of the total 43 required credits as listed above is obligatory for graduation.
(2) Courses Offered by the Center
The courses offered by the center are divided into five modules. The courses of Module 1 are required to all the students of the center. The rest of the courses are selected. The students of the center have to select at least one course from each of the rest modules. Some of the courses will be instructed in German Language.

Admission
All the students with bachelor degree of Arts and Social Sciences in China have opportunity to apply for the program. Cooperate partners of PekingUniversityarein charge of the enrollment according to a certain quota. The total number of the enrollment is 20 per year. To be eligible for participation in the program the students have to take the German examination. German language is the first foreign language of the program.
